" Hey Massacan, I thought you didn't use stuff from who-knows-where. There you go, you've changed!"
Money over principles. You're sellouts...
I'm stopping you.
Generally speaking, we always try to use components manufactured as close to home as possible.
Italy, obviously for our frames (and that will never change) and, in general, short supply chains with people we can call.
I'm thinking of Miche , Ingrid and Aveo .
Stuff whose origin and manufacturing logic are understandable.
The thing is, sometimes there simply isn't a credible local alternative to a given need.
Equal brakes weren't discovered yesterday.
We assembled them, adjusted them and rode them on all kinds of terrain, both on Paula and on Pianella .
These are not our first mechanical brakes.
We rode for a long time with TRP Spyre and we also tested the Paul Components Klamper.
TRPs are simple and affordable, but limited in power and progressiveness as soon as the use becomes demanding.
At Paul's, the manufacturing is really nice, but the braking quality is not really superior to a well-tuned TRP, for a significantly higher price.
With the Equal speakers, it's a completely different feeling:
“Oh, but it really brakes!”
"The feel and the gradual progression are great!"
“Oh, but it’s really well done.”
Basically, it's the first mechanical proposal that makes sense to us.
What we like is that the Growtac Equal doesn't try to cheat.
He is not trying to imitate hydraulics.
It's a component that we choose because it makes sense, not because it ticks a box.
We are therefore very pleased to officially launch this partnership with Growtac .
The entire range is available on our website.
The Equal setting effectively becomes an option offered on our builds .
What if I want a racing handlebar?
Today, there are not many new groupsets actually designed to work with mechanical pull brakes.
The only coherent set still available remains the aging SRAM Apex Doubletap.
If you want to ride with a recent and proven mechanical drivetrain like a Shimano GRX 12 speed , you will not be able to use Shimano levers designed for hydraulic braking.
You will need the Equal Control Levers for drop handlebars.
The levers work by friction , like on pre-indexed bicycles, where gear changes were done by feel.
This operation guarantees full compatibility with 11 and 12 speed mechanical transmissions on the market.
If you want to maintain indexing close to what current groups offer, it is possible to install a clickplate.
To date, they only offer indexing with Shimano 11 and 12 speed transmissions.
Before you even asked, we obviously requested dedicated clickplates for SRAM Eagle 70 and 90 mountain bike derailleurs!
Designed as a complete system, the levers offer rigid kinematics, optimized pull for Equal calipers and a durable design, independent of any closed group.
In terms of ergonomics and construction, Growtac's Equal Control Levers are designed like a real mechanical part, not like a standard group lever.
The body is entirely machined from aluminum, with a simple and robust internal mechanism. The lever offers a grip similar to that found on modern road brake levers, with a shape designed for long rides, whether with hands on top or on the hoods.
The stroke is short, the contact point precise, and the lever's rigidity greatly limits deformation under load. The result is precise and consistent braking, without any bouncy feel, even when braking hard.
Everything is removable, repairable, and adjustable. Tension, stroke, and feel can be fine-tuned without relying on electronic adjustments or proprietary standards.
We are clearly on a classic Japanese industrial approach: Make it simple, solid and durable.
